The Cold Room is a specialized storage expansion that introduces the Cold Constraint — a temperature hazard for parcels that must stay refrigerated until shipment. Fish deliveries, chilled goods, and other temperature-sensitive mail suffer ambient heat damage if left in the main post office or on the sunny dock during daytime shifts.

Unlocking the Cold Room adds a critical layer to package handling beyond weighing and stamping. The companion Hot Room handles heat-sensitive parcels with the opposite constraint. Patch Note #1 (July 11, 2026) reduced parcel pile counts in the cold and hot rooms, making early temperature-room onboarding less overwhelming.

When a customer hands you a cold-required parcel, the scanner flags the temperature constraint. Apply the correct destination and weight stamps, then move the package into the Cold Room immediately — do not leave it on the processing desk or dock.

Leaving cold parcels in standard mailroom zones during the day causes heat damage, resulting in score deductions on your shift summary. The penalty applies even if stamps are otherwise correct. Standard non-cold parcels can safely be stored in the Cold Room overnight without damage — the room functions as universal cold storage.

Parcels can combine multiple hazards — Cold + Heavy or Cold + Fragile. Use this placement guide inside the Cold Room:

Never load cold parcels onto the boat deck during daytime. The outside dock is an uncooled zone and cold mail expires under direct sun. Stage cold boxes in the Cold Room until dusk, then transfer rapidly to the boat following heavy/fragile physics rules.

The safest cold parcel workflow follows a strict five-step timeline at dusk — loading cold mail on the boat too early is the most common Cold Room mistake:

1. Day phase: Stamp cold outgoing mail and store inside the Cold Room. Never place it on the sunny dock.
2. Captain arrives: Wait until the captain is at the dock and the final walk-in customer is served.
3. Cold Room run: Collect all outgoing cold parcels from the Cold Room before ringing the bell.
4. Rapid transfer: Move cold boxes to the boat deck using heavy-bottom / fragile-top stacking rules.
5. Instant departure: Ring the bell immediately to minimize warm-air exposure on the dock.

The scanner shows a snowflake icon for cold constraints. Apply the ice temperature sticker after scanning before storage.

Adopt this four-step routine once the Cold Room unlocks:

1. Day intake: Scan customer parcels. Stamp cold-required outgoing mail and store in the Cold Room immediately.
2. Separate zones: Keep a dedicated cold staging shelf distinct from Port Windy and Sunny Shores transit areas.
3. Dusk transfer: Move cold boxes from the Cold Room to the boat only when loading for departure.
4. Physics check: Place heavy cold parcels on the bottom deck layer; fragile cold parcels on top with nothing above them.
